Advocating for Malaysia’s Strays – SAFM & Coalition Took to Malaysian Parliament

On 19th November 2024, Persatuan Haiwan Terbiar Malaysia SAFM, in partnership with IAPWA Penang and the Animal Kindness Coalition, along with a group of dedicated animal welfare organizations, took a monumental step in championing the rights of Malaysia’s stray animals. Together, we brought their plight to the nation’s core decision-making platform—our Parliament.

Persatuan Haiwan Terbiar Malaysia SAFM’s President, Mr. Kalaivanan, stood united with Ms. Choong, President of IAPWA Penang, Uztaz Muhammad bin Ab Rashid, and representatives from Animal Kindness Coalition Asther and Helena and MAPS (Karin) to present the harsh realities faced by stray animals across the country. The coalition called for stronger legislation, improved enforcement, and the implementation of humane, effective solutions to tackle this pressing issue.

Mr. Kalaivanan passionately condemned the inhumane practice of shooting stray animals and advocated for immediate amendments to the Akta Kebajikan Haiwan 2015. He stressed that only through compassionate policies and rigorous enforcement can Malaysia ensure a safer and more humane future for its strays.

The session also highlighted Penang Island’s humane stray dog population management program, initiated in collaboration with MBPP since March 2018. This program stands as a shining example of how humane, sustainable solutions can create lasting impact.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to YB Lee Chean Chung for taking the time to meet with us after our briefing session. His willingness to discuss the issue further and share valuable ideas for moving forward inspired hope and reinforced the importance of collaborative efforts in achieving meaningful change.

The positive response from the Members of Parliament who attended our presentation, coupled with YB Lee’s support, was a source of renewed optimism for the future of stray animal welfare in Malaysia.

Let us continue this fight for the voiceless and work toward a brighter, more humane tomorrow for all strays in Malaysia.
