Misi Banjir Kelantan 2024 – SAFM Bantu Haiwan Terjejas

Addressing Animal Cruelty in Malaysia – SAFM Speaks at Universiti Malaya

On December 12, 2024, Persatuan Haiwan Terbiar Malaysia (SAFM) participated in “Unveiling the Silent Suffering: Addressing Animal Cruelty in Malaysia,” organized by ECOLAWGY, Universiti Malaya. The event provided a vital platform for discussing animal cruelty, focusing on prevention strategies, legal advocacy, and community-driven solutions. Animal cruelty remains a major concern in Malaysia, ranging from neglect and abandonment to physical abuse and illegal breeding. Cases like Kopi’s, where conflicting by-laws complicated legal action, demonstrate the need for unified animal welfare laws. SAFM stressed that cruelty is not just a legal issue but also a social challenge rooted in cultural attitudes and lack of awareness. Public education and empathy-building campaigns are essential in reshaping societal perspectives on animal welfare. Preventing animal cruelty starts with strengthening the legal framework and enforcing laws like the Animal Welfare Act. The event highlighted strategies such as streamlining animal protection laws, launching educational campaigns, and promoting community involvement in rescue, fostering, and adoption. Humane stray management through spay and neuter programs was also emphasized. The need for multi-stakeholder collaboration was a key takeaway. SAFM urged partnerships between NGOs, veterinarians, legal professionals, and the public. Legal support, stricter policies, and expanded rescue networks are essential for effective advocacy. Importantly, SAFM expressed hope that more future lawyers would offer pro bono legal services for animal rights. Their legal expertise can strengthen justice for abused animals and support policy reforms. SAFM remains committed to expanding advocacy efforts, fostering partnerships, and creating a compassionate Malaysia where all animals are treated with dignity and care. We sincerely thank ECOLAWGY, Universiti Malaya, for organizing this impactful event and inspiring collective action. Together, we can be the voice for Malaysia’s voiceless animals.

Wildlife Rescue in Gombak

Wildlife Rescue in Gombak Last Saturday, a monkey was rescued from a fallen tree and found roaming around alone in Jalan Ulu Gombak Lama. The rescuer immediately took the monkey home to be fed and treated. Subsequently, the rescuer contacted SAFM for further advice. Preparations were made by SAFM made preparations for the rescuer to hand over the monkey to the Department of Wildlife and National Parks Peninsular Malaysia (PERHILITAN). Kudos to the rescuer for his immediate action to resolve the matter! In Malaysia, each state has a Department of Wildlife and National Parks responsible for the protection, management, and preservation of wildlife. Keeping protected wildlife as pets is generally illegal. However, in Terengganu and Kelantan, monkeys can only be reared at home with a license on the basis of earning a livelihood. The requisite approvals and license must be obtained from PERHILITAN for such purposes. In other states, private individuals are generally prohibited from rearing wild animals at home. Malaysians are encouraged to contact PERHILITAN immediately in the case of injured wild animals. Please refer to the list below for the contact numbers of PERHILITAN in each state within Peninsular Malaysia. Animal Rescue in Setapak

Animal Rescue in Setapak On 13 May 2021, SAFM received a complaint of a pet dumping incident involving a dog abandoned by its owner without food or water supply for 2 months. The dog was discovered in an apartment unit in Setapak, Kuala Lumpur. When neighbouring residents realized loud barking noises, they became suspicious and forwarded their concerns to the building management committee. The apartment owner was contacted and revealed that the tenant had long left the unit. As the apartment had not been inspected since the departure of the tenant, the apartment owner was not aware that a dog had been left to fend for itself within the unit. SAFM members managed to rescue the traumatised and frail-looking dog found in unsanitary conditions with its faeces littered everywhere. Animal cruelty is a criminal offence in Malaysia. Section 29 of the Animal Welfare Act 2015 states that any person being the owner of an animal commits an offence by abandoning the animal in circumstances that it is likely to suffer trauma, pain, or suffering by reason of relocation, starvation, thirst, injury, or illness. Upon conviction, the individual shall be liable to a fine of not less than RM20,000 and not more than RM100,000 or to imprisonment for a term not more than three years or to both. As such, pet owners are strongly urged to be responsible citizens and avoid any form of animal cruelty. Currently, the dog is in KC Valley Animal Shelter under the care of Mr. KC, the owner of the shelter. SAFM thanks Mr. KC for his kindness in providing temporary shelter for the dog pending investigation by the Department of Veterinary Services for further action. SAFM welcomes donations to support KC Valley Animal Shelter and Mr. KC to continue caring for and protecting abandoned and stray animals. Name : Persatuan Haiwan Terbiar Malaysia (SAFM)
