Animal Flood Relief – HULU LANGAT, Selangor On January 1 and 2, 2022, The Stray Animal Foundation Malaysia (SAFM) helped animals and pet keepers in Hulu Langat Selangor. SFAM carried out this mission in collaboration with the Malaysian Veterinary Department (DVS), Malaysian Veterinary Association (MAVMA), MSAVA, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) KELAB KUCING MALAYSIA, and SPCA Selangor. The association bodies involved volunteered to help provide dog and cat food, and treatment including medicine for the people of Hulu Langat who were affected by the flood last December. 850 animals were treated for free while 350 people have received animal feed aid that includes cat foods and dog foods. Kudos to the volunteers and people of Hulu Langat. The SAFM fund is still open to assist the affected animals and caregivers. Continue to contribute so that we can help more flood victims by providing food, medicine, and basic items.

Flood Relief – Puchong On 8th March 2022, Klang Valley was hit by another flash flood that affected parts of Kuala Lumpur. Thus, SAFM had mobilised an emergency team of 10 rescuers to help the stray animals that had been affected on 8 & 10 March. We localised the Puchong district of Kuala Lumpur as it was one of the most badly affected areas. Many victims had lost their property and animal pets due to the flash flood. Persatuan Haiwan Terbiar (SAFM) had done basic medical examinations on the animals and provided medical help and food assistance to animals, particularly strays, in these areas: 1) Kampung Tengah Puchong 2) Kampung Sri Aman 3) Kampung Bersatu, Puchong 4) Kampung Kuala Sungai Baru (KKSB) 5) Kampung Sri Puchong 6) Kinrara Garden 7) Kinrara Court 8) Taman Kinrara Seksyen 1 9) Taman Mas Puchong 10) Kampung Sri Andalas In many cases of natural disasters, animals would be the last group to receive help and be rescued. Many of these animals lack nutrition and care to continue surviving. A lot of them need to be relocated because they are lost and drifted away from their original area. SAFM would continue to help animals in need. Donations are welcomed to further assist these missions and give them a chance to survive.

Animal Flood Relief, Terengganu Persatuan Haiwan Terbiar (SAFM) had mobilised a rescue and flood assistance mission to Kuala Berang, Terengganu on 5th & 6th March 2022. The area was badly affected by the seasonal flood which has caused heavy damages to property and families. SAFM has distributed around 1,740 kg of cat and dog kibbles to pet and animal owners in 11 selected villages including Kampung Bukit Gemuruh , Kampung Kuala Menjing, Kampung Durian Badar, Kampung Padang Setar, Kampung Sekayu, Kampung Pelandan, Kampung Cheting, Kampung Menerong, Kampung Betong, Kampung Kemat, and Kampung Kuala Pueh. Food and kibbles were also distributed to stray animals around the affected area. 8 members and volunteers from SAFM had taken part, which involved 3 4-wheel drive vehicles to mobilise the mission. Around 50-100 pet owners from every selected village had received assistance from this mission, which was given through their village chief. They were reported to have been thankful as their pet food supply had been cut off. SAFM takes this opportunity to extend our thanks to MAVMA’s exco member Dr Farina Mustaffa Kamal who donated part of her pet food supply for us to distribute to the victims.

Animal Flood Relief – Johor The seasonal monsoon had caused damaging floods to areas in Peninsular Malaysia. Segamat, Johor is one of the areas that was badly affected. Persatuan Haiwan Terbiar (SAFM) had mobilised a team of 17 rescuers to Pogoh, Segamat Johor for 2 days (8 Jan – 9 Jan 2022). Around 1,270 kg of cat and dog kibbles including 2 cat cages are distributed to pet owners in 4 villages in Segamat: 1. Kampung Chodan 2. Kampung Bukit Limau Manis 3. Kampung Bukit Senggir 4. Kampung Tekam Pogoh 3 Segamat Food and kibbles were also distributed to stray animals around the affected area. Other than the volunteers and members, SAFM had also deployed 5 rescue boats and 8 land vehicles for this mission. Around 50-70 pet and animal owners in each village had received the assistance given through their village chief. SAFM takes this opportunity to extend their thanks to: 1. Food and Medical Aid for Animal Shelter Affected By Massive Floods in Hulu Langat On Sunday, 2 January 2022, SAFM visited Meow Shelter located in Hulu Langat, Selangor. Food and medical supplies were distributed to the shelter that houses many abandoned cats and dogs. The initiative was a collaborative effort between SAFM, SPCA Selangor, and the Malaysia Veterinary Association (MAVMA) to ease the burden of the shelter owner to feed and care for the shelter animals in the aftermath of the floods that hit the area in December 2021. SAFM extends its gratitude to all donors and the public for their generous contribution in lending a helping hand to animal shelters such as Meow Shelter to continue the noble deed of protecting abandoned animals in Malaysia.

Wildlife Rescue in Gombak Last Saturday, a monkey was rescued from a fallen tree and found roaming around alone in Jalan Ulu Gombak Lama. The rescuer immediately took the monkey home to be fed and treated. Subsequently, the rescuer contacted SAFM for further advice. Preparations were made by SAFM made preparations for the rescuer to hand over the monkey to the Department of Wildlife and National Parks Peninsular Malaysia (PERHILITAN). Kudos to the rescuer for his immediate action to resolve the matter! In Malaysia, each state has a Department of Wildlife and National Parks responsible for the protection, management, and preservation of wildlife. Keeping protected wildlife as pets is generally illegal. However, in Terengganu and Kelantan, monkeys can only be reared at home with a license on the basis of earning a livelihood. The requisite approvals and license must be obtained from PERHILITAN for such purposes. In other states, private individuals are generally prohibited from rearing wild animals at home. Malaysians are encouraged to contact PERHILITAN immediately in the case of injured wild animals. Stray Feeding and TNR Program As a non-governmental organization (NGO) that does not depend on any party, SFAM needs funds from the public to carry out activities like feeding stray animals including paying the medical costs at the veterinary clinic for injured or sick animals. We also help to prevent the overpopulation of wild animals through the ‘Trap, Neuter, Return’ program while assisting in the mission of rescuing abused animals, injured, or in danger.

Animal Rescue in Setapak On 13 May 2021, SAFM received a complaint of a pet dumping incident involving a dog abandoned by its owner without food or water supply for 2 months. The dog was discovered in an apartment unit in Setapak, Kuala Lumpur. When neighbouring residents realized loud barking noises, they became suspicious and forwarded their concerns to the building management committee. The apartment owner was contacted and revealed that the tenant had long left the unit. As the apartment had not been inspected since the departure of the tenant, the apartment owner was not aware that a dog had been left to fend for itself within the unit. SAFM members managed to rescue the traumatised and frail-looking dog found in unsanitary conditions with its faeces littered everywhere. Animal cruelty is a criminal offence in Malaysia. Section 29 of the Animal Welfare Act 2015 states that any person being the owner of an animal commits an offence by abandoning the animal in circumstances that it is likely to suffer trauma, pain, or suffering by reason of relocation, starvation, thirst, injury, or illness. Upon conviction, the individual shall be liable to a fine of not less than RM20,000 and not more than RM100,000 or to imprisonment for a term not more than three years or to both. As such, pet owners are strongly urged to be responsible citizens and avoid any form of animal cruelty. Currently, the dog is in KC Valley Animal Shelter under the care of Mr. KC, the owner of the shelter. SAFM thanks Mr. KC for his kindness in providing temporary shelter for the dog pending investigation by the Department of Veterinary Services for further action.
